The Kimberley Process was established as a way to help stop the trade of conflict diamonds, or “blood diamonds,” used to fund rebel movements, violence, and human rights abuses.

Countries participating in this process have agreed to national legislation, export and import controls, statistical data sharing, and other measures to ensure only ethically sourced diamonds are traded among them.

They can only legally trade with other countries who have also met the requirements, and international shipments of rough diamonds must be accompanied by a Kimberley Process certificate. This certificate guarantees the diamonds are conflict free.
